3 Tips to Protect Yourself against Crime When Traveling

While there is crime in almost every destination you travel to, there are some tips that can significantly protect you from acts of crime. Here are three of them.

Be aware of your surroundings

One of the best ways to avoid crime as a traveler is to be aware of your surroundings. Most criminals are looking for an easy target which is a person that is not paying attention, a person that is excessively drunk or a person that is showing a lot of flashy belongings such as jewelry, clothes, watch, etc.

If you plan ahead and are aware of what is going on around you, you can usually protect yourself from pickpockets and other small time thiefs.

Try not to travel alone

While traveling alone can be fun, there are times that you should look to find a friend or acquaintance to travel with. If you are a female traveling alone, make sure that you know the area well and that you are aware of your surroundings. If you make yourself known to be a traveler and don’t know the area, language or customs, you can be a very easy mark for many criminals. Many female travelers might find comfort by traveling on a train or through a city with other female travelers that they meet along the way. You are usually safer in larger numbers than in a foreign city alone.

Don’t drink excessively

The majority of problems occur when people are excessively drunk and not aware of their surrounding, nor can control their behavior. While having a few drinks may be great, if you get drunk expect the worse to happen. Many common criminals will rob you when you are drunk or passed out. You can also find yourself fighting with the locals which can get you arrested. Don’t drink excessively unless you are in a safe area and with friends.
