One of the most practical and affordable ways to travel within the states or overseas is by bus. While most people don't use buses to travel very long distances, in Europe and as part of many tour excursions buses are a common form of transportation. Here are some tips on traveling safely on a bus.
Before you get on a bus, if you feel it is not in good mechanical condition, choose not to get on. While most buses in the United States and in Western Europe are in very good condition or excellent condition, if you must use a bus in developing countries, you will find that they may be extremely dangerous for certain road conditions.
If you have small children, make sure that they can fit in the seat comfortably, as well as have seat belts that can restrain them safely. Make sure the seat belts fit them comfortably; you don't want the belts to choke your child. If you need to transport a carriage on public transportation, most buses have a seatbelt or area that can safely store a carriage and your child.
If you are traveling for long distances, make sure that your belongings are safely locked up and that any money or expensive items are on your person. While theft does not occur often on buses, you should always be aware and alert. Unfortunately, most bus stations are havens for undesirables, so make sure you travel during day light or evening hours. After hours or mid night bus travel is not recommended, due to the fact that you will usually be standing out at a bus stop by yourself very late at night. Try to have a friend wait with you or for you at your destination. For a safe bus trip, check out the above tips.
