Beware of Travel Scams

For people traveling either domestically or internationally it is important to beware of the many travel scams. When people travel, they are more laid back, not paying attention and less likely to make a fuss over certain fees and charges. However, if you are planning on traveling in the near future, keep your eye out on the following travel scams.

Taxi fares

Many people that arrive at their destination usually want to get to their hotel or resort as quick as possibly, one of the ways to accomplish this is to use taxi services. Unfortunately, taxi services can scam you out of lots of money. Many taxi drivers might take you the long way from the airport to your hotel, they may take their time instead of driving the proper speed, they may even have a rigged meter that can charge you much more that a normal taxi ride to your destination should cost. Make sure you find out the price of a trip before you get into a taxi. Most hotels will tell you the average bill for a taxi cab from a certain airport, so that you can be assured a fare is in the ball park. It is also a good idea to get a receipt from your driver that has his name or license number.

Currency Exchange

Another tourist scam is currency exchange. Many thieves try to scam tourists out of their dollars by offering good rates on currency exchange. Do yourself a favor, don't fall for the great rates, most of the time, they will give you counterfeit money or give you a hassle. Make sure you only exchange currency at banks, legal currency exchange stations or at the airport. In order to get the best rate, use your ATM card. Most debit cards can be used overseas. The best part about using your ATM or debit card overseas is the great exchange rate you receive. The worst rates are usually available at either your hotel or the airport. However, a high exchange rate is much better than being scammed out of your money by criminals.
